Awkward and uncomfortable from the outset. For a preliminary interview in a technical role, the interviewers seemed far more interested in my personal life than exploring the qualifications I have on my resume. The lopsided power imbalance in a job interview means anything but a full answer is going to be a problem. The interviewers acted oblivious that their open ended questions to tell them things that are not job related were inappropriate, even though they have an HR department behind them. I’m in a difficult situation as a member of a protected class, if I disclose, in the past I’ve had job interviews end abruptly, if I say, ‘none of your business stick to the job’, in this situation with Teranet, the interviewers asked again until I answered, claiming it was important to ‘get a feel for what I’m like’ to judge how my personality would fit on the team. I wish I had been evaluated on more job-related criteria instead of some unstated, intangible “ability to fit in” test with no right answer. When something seems really unfair, it usually is. I’m considering taking my comments to the HRTO unless Teranet wants to proactively reach out.
