Process was as I’d seen posted on here previously, but personal experience and some reflections below. Overall, I found the process enjoyable, answered all my questions and, having joined, it sold Berkeley very accurately.
The investment of Partners’ time throughout was very noticeable, as was each of them being impressive yet modest and down to earth. The communication before and after each round was very professional/impressive e.g. rapid response times and valuable feedback.
1st round - following initial phone interview - Interviewed by one Partner (1½ hrs ):
Very warm and informal feel. Looking back, initial impressions were right: Genuine interest in who I am as a person; High calibre of Berkeley’s people; the down to earth, warm and good character of the company. Was very conversational for the most part. Covered:
• Overview of Berkeley’s history, values and current situation, as well as all about the Partner
• My CV with some detail on particular projects, experiences, methods etc.
• Me as a person i.e. motivations, interests, preferences, style, personality, etc.
• Being a consultant at Berkeley: How the company works, current projects, future opportunities…
• My questions (plenty of time given)
2nd round - Presentation interview with two Partners (1 ¾- 2hrs):
Presented on two projects I led - not a formal presentation, no visual aids allowed just talking through around a table – followed by very thorough questioning after each ‘presentation’.
While much more thorough than 1st round it was still fairly friendly, and conversational at times. Interviewers really probed deep on understanding me as a professional (and, it seemed, my style particularly) as well as specifics of what I did, how, my thinking at key points, and deeper rationale. Covered:
• Each Partner briefing on themselves – personal and professional background, time at Berkeley, current responsibilities and clients, why they are committed to Berkeley.
• Two project presentations followed by Q&As (not all one-way either – I used to get more of an idea of how they operate particularly on assignments, and the fit for me both on this and more generally)
• My questions
• 2-way discussion on Berkeley’s pipeline and particular areas of interest
[Online psychometric tests taken before 3rd round, which apparently aren't pass/fail but instead used as contextual info to understand candidates as part of final decision]
3rd round - Role play with one Partner and one People/Recruitment Manager (2½ - 2¾ hrs):
More formal, time bound and challenging than previous rounds. Despite that though, before and after the role-play I got further good, warm impression of the company.
• Scenario and information with time to read, and prepare for client meeting
• Role play client meeting
• Role play debrief and planning session with Partner
• Next steps and engagement comms to Client
Post-role play, had a final chance to ask any remaining questions about Berkeley and next steps.
