I applied on-line. Later that day I received an ATS-generated email asking for my availability to have a phone interview. The phone interview was scheduled for a few days away with an internal recruiter.
The phone interview was choppy. The interviewer had a list of prepared questions, but tried to type my answers verbatim. She explained that she was going to pass my answers on to the her boss, and she wanted to make sure she wrote what I had said exactly. Unfortunately, this really slowed the process and made it challenging to get into a flow as I ended up almost dictating my answers. Also, several times she read back what she had written and it did not match what I actually said. Because the process moved slowly, I really had to keep my answers short.
Recommendation: If she wanted to write down what I actually said verbatim, she could have asked to record the session (which I would have agreed to) and then transcribed it later. Or, she could have sent me the pre-defined questions in advance so I could write my answers, and then in the interview she could have drilled deeper into any of the answers that needed clarification.
The interviewer said that she would get back to me within 2 weeks and let me know if her boss wanted to speak with me or not. At the 2 week mark I sent a follow-up, and received a quick response that everything was delayed due to a company-wide convention, and that I was still in consideration.
The next response I got was an ATS-generated "While we were very impressed with your qualifications, we decided to pursue other candidates ..." message. No further communication or clarification was received by the company.
