      Online/Mobile Product Manager Interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at The Home Depot in Nov 2014

      Interview

I received a direct inquiry via LinkedIn from HD recruiter gauging my interest in an Online/Mobile Product Mgmt opportunity. A couple days later, had a discovery phone screen with HR based on my LinkedIn profile to request resume and determine fit with available job reqs. A couple days later, a formal HR phone interview based on my resume--overview of position, relocation, benefits, etc. Later the next week, I had a series of 30-45 min phone/video-conference interviews with 2 team members. Scheduled to interview with Group manager was deferred due to scheduling conflicts. Questions were behavioral; nothing unusual. A follow up convo with one of the team members to get additional insights. Next (1.5 weeks later), I was invited for an on-site day at HQ campus just before holidays---I flew in the night before a half-day of 1:1 interviews consisting of a blend of behavioral and culture/fit interview questions. The on-site started with 3 individual interviews (~25-30 mins) with peers (product managers), and 1 session (~45 min) with the Group Mgr. Then lunch with the broader team of ~8. After lunch, the VP was available for ~45 mins---this was a behavioral and fit discussion to review strategy formation, product choice and decision making, gaining consensus and providing data-driven recommendations...and many points listed below. The interviews were mostly conversations regarding roadmaps and project/product processes, organizational priorities and executive sponsorship, competitive landscape, career development and succession planning, team chemistry, city culture and lifestyle. I sent my emails of gratitude and interest to my interviewers and lead HR liaison. I wasn't expecting a quick response, with their focus on holiday sales. However, after 2-3 weeks of radio silence, I concluded (correctly) that I would not be offered. I NEVER heard ANYTHING! No explanations or professional courtesy. I can only speculate that it related to relocation, or rank/title & comp, or some other unknown...a skills/culture fit mismatch seems unlikely. I felt there wasn't enough gap between the position and my level of experience but this could be creatively resolved. The process was generally positive, the team positive and stable. My questions did receive answers that were very much similar to employee reviews/comments regarding work/life balance and career development....nothing new there from any other Fortune org. Best bet is to pay attention to analyst earnings reports to see whether the business scales up or down in workforce and store openings....
