      Merchandise Manager Interview

      Mar 5, 2018
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at The RealReal (San Francisco, CA) in Jan 2018

      Interview

      1) thorough phone conversation with recruiter = very positive. 2) video call with hiring manager = positive. 3) assigned lengthy at-home creative/strategic assessment = open-ended and enjoyable. 4) 2nd video call with hiring manager to discuss project = minimal feedback. 5) assigned an edited version of assessment since something was off in the first one = I'm all for it. 6) was informed they still were not content with the assessment, but nonetheless being flown out on-site to meet with various team members, manager, and higher ranks = confused, but excited. 7) scheduled to meet with 4 different people in a 2 hour time span = wait, that doesn't seem like enough time to cover much, especially after the trouble of a 5 hour flight, hotel room, etc. 8) hectic, rushed, met with each person separately (repetitive), never got feedback or conversation regarding my projects, last person told me I might be better suited for another job, so let's meet with 5th person then = confusion and frustration and questioning my desire to want to work for them. 9) flown home and put on hold for several weeks while they figured out the second job possibilities = becoming indifferent and actually a bit angry. 10) the process started all over again, with similar frustrations and time wasted with no feedback and no coherent decision makers, no direction, no apparent communicated vision or goals = they say want scrappy, but they really want the opposite = negative experience and 2 months of my life wasted.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

I think they didn't have a concrete version of what they wanted the job to actually be -- while I am all for ambiguity and meeting the challenge of gray areas across disciplines, I was being asked strategies regarding things that were never mentioned for the job. After that, it was evident it didn't really matter how I answered because they were trying to put pegs in the wrong-shaped holes. Each team member had their own idea of the role to help them ease the pain of whatever overwork or burdens they carried -- but those needs did not seem clearly defined, understood, nor welcomed by higher ups.
