I submitted an application online. I was contacted for a phone interview a few weeks later. After the phone interview, I had an in-person interview with the managing editor and two senior editors. After those interviews, I had to do a fairly straightforward writing assignment. Unfortunately I didn't receive an offer, but everyone was very friendly and I appreciate that she called to let me know my standing throughout the process.
