Applied online and got a response in a few days to set up an initial phone screen with the hiring manager. During the phone interview we both agreed that I might be a bit too junior for the role but should keep talking.
Got scheduled a second interview with a product manager. The second interview was also non-technical and towards the end the interviewer mentioned that they were no longer considering me for the Lead role but a less senior one. I didn't get any indication of that fact from the recruiter, just randomly came across it while interviewing.
I got a form rejection email a few days later regarding the Lead role. I followed up with the recruiter about the less senior role and waited a week but got no response. Followed up again and the recruiter just forwarded the original rejection email regarding the lead role, as though they couldn't be bothered to give a real response.
To give some background, I had interviewed with Twilio twice in the past with no offer and both times I felt respected. I was sent a non-form email explaining the circumstances that seemed honest and caring.
This time I felt completely disrespected. I am not sure what happened to their recruiting team but the experiences were night and day. I assumed this was just some fluke but apparently others have also had bad experiences with Twilio's hiring process recently. Hopefully they get their act together because while I genuinely like the company, this experience completely changes my perception of it.
