Three interviews over the course of two and a half hours - two panels and a one-on-one. Intensive to say the least, but I did well. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. Where the negative experience comes into play is what happened with the followup. I sent out my thank yous to the immediate department members who I had interviewed with. None of them acknowledged me but that's okay. The department head, who made herself a point of contact in the whole process, ignored my additional followup requests over the next few weeks. Flat-out ignored me. Eventually I wrote to someone else and I received a bizarre response, that the "offer was still in process," whatever that means. A week or two after that contact I received a generic blanket rejection e-mail that opened with "Dear Applicant." Obviously it was BCC'd to everyone else. I wasted two and a half hours of my time being probed here only to be duly ignored and then addressed as "applicant." I would think that with such an intensive interview process there would be a little more class involved when communicating with applicants. The department head also accused me of being a perfectionist during our interview. Nope, not a perfectionist; I just have high standards, which is something that this whole process completely lacked. UCSD does great work, but I would hope it's not like this in other departments. Very poorly handled here.
