I applied in-person. The process took 4 days. I interviewed at UC San Diego (San Diego, CA) in Mar 2012
Interview
I read about the PI's lab on his website and asked via email if I could join his team as an undergraduate research assistant. He invited me for a 30 minute in person interview, during which we discussed what type of research he typically does and what my responsibilities would consist of, if I were to be hired.

Question 1
What about the research interested you to apply to join the team?
Very easy interview, pretty much anybody can do it. If you get an interview expect to be accepted to the position that very day. I feel like they just pick student workers based on their schedule rather than their skills. You will have to be a very incompetent interviewer to not get an offer if you are extended an interview in my opinion.
