This was the worst interview I ever had. I spoke to two people on the Accounting team who were absolutely terrible. From the moment I said hello, the atmosphere was tense and they looked unhappy to be there.
I have nonprofit experience so one of the first questions was what a nonprofit calls their income statement. The answer they were looking for was statement of activities which I didn’t remember. They were immediately skeptical that I had any work experience at all. All of the nonprofits I worked at called it an income statement on all documentation. I was so insecure after the interview that I looked them up (public info) and I was correct.
About 10 minutes in they asked me to describe the month end fixed asset/depreciation process at my prior organization. It had been about a year since I’d done that so my answer probably wasn’t as clean as it could have been but I covered all the bases. The interviewers laughed and said “and did you ever pass an audit?” Which… is so incredibly rude? Even if you decided you don’t like an interview candidate you should still remember to behave like a professional and also a human being. And we did pass our audits every year with flying colors, for the record.
I thanked them for their time and ended the interview early. What a baffling experience. I felt genuine relief that I dodged the bullet of such a toxic environment and I’m also convinced that people who are happy with themselves don’t treat others this way.
