I applied directly on their site, and about a week later I received a response via email from their HR rep. We agreed upon a time for the telephone interview. The phone interview was casual yet professional and polite. Along with the questions they had for me, they also openly answered my questions about the company, additional details about the position's responsibilities, the culture, and environment. When I asked about the next steps, she said she would send my resume onto CEO for review, which was a good sign. About a week later I received an email saying that they were seeking someone that more closely met their needs. I replied and thanked them for their interest and time and asked if there was something specific about my application and interview that knocked me out of the running so I could learn from it for the future. However, I did not hear back. I expected that a response would be a longshot once I was no longer under consideration, but it did not hurt to ask.
