All my initial tech rounds were positive and amicable which were done by women. I felt so secure and joyous till I got my last round with hiring manager. To my surprise, more than my tech skills and trying to grill there, he was more keen and interested to know whether I am married or not, Am I already having a baby and indirectly trying to know if I am going to plan for a baby!! It was very discomforting situation for me and I did not expect for that. The interview went for more than 2 hours non-stop without asking for lunch/food etc. And, I was in their office from morning till 4-4.30 PM. And, even till the end he was trying to ask questions and raising doubts, which were on basis of assumptions that - I am a woman and wouldn't be able to work for long hours and wont fit in a "start-up" environment. Whereas my profile and work history was sufficiently showing the complete opposite. This incident had happened last year (2019) and I had forgotten about this treating this as just a bad experience. But, today when I was going through my current company's ethics and code of conduct, my eyes got opened and thought of sharing this to confidently say - "No, this not OK and its nothing to do with having just a bad day in interview". I came to know that asking such questions and trying to make decisions based on these "discriminatory" criteria is unethical and violates code of conduct of a workplace. And, btw I have joined a start-up recently, which did not had any of these assumptions while hiring me and they have strong ethics and values which they also let its employees follow seriously. Fortunate enough that I did not end up in a wrong workplace and found my fit.
