I applied online and after 2 weeks was called for an interview for the 5th avenue store.
Arriving to the location I had to wait in the break room, along with 11 other people which was very awkward since we the potential future employees sat on one side of the room and on other all the people who already had the job and had nothing to be nervous about.
Finally a girl who works for HR came in and told us to follow her along with another employee, where we proceeded to walk outside the building, into the next building's lobby, down 2 flights of stairs into some basement only to finally enter a room that could hold around 60 people.
From there they gave us some paperwork and if we had our resume, didn't have to fill out certain parts, and in the meantime in that exact same room were led one by one to the back of the room to be interviewed by either the girl or guy, while everyone could obviously hear the whole conversation/questions.
Questions:
What do you know about UNIQLO and why do want to work here?
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Have you ever had a conflict and how did you deal with it?
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Why should we hire you?
When was a time you showed good customer service?
The interview itself I felt went really well, I was able to tackle every question and i especially feel I helped her understand that I genuinely like UNIQLO rather then simply being someone whose looking for a paycheck.
After interviewing the majority of the people, they started what I presume is the process of elimination and called out the names of 4 of them and told them to come with her.
When she came back and there was still 1 more person left to be interviewed she called out 6 names, this time mine was included.
I was prepared for the disappointing "sorry" considering the last guy she interviewed didn't get called. But instead she said "congratulations you've moved on to the 2nd interview"
Unfortunately what was expected to be a 1 day process now became 2 and now I had to wait till the end of the week for my next interview with the GM of the store.
Once again arriving to the break room I found myself waiting with 3 other people now, and once again we were called by the same HR girl who took us down to a really tiny room where the GM was, where he interviewed all of us as a group.
Prepared to tackle any question while standing out over the competition I was very surprised and disappointed by the 2 generic questions we we're asked instead.
When was a time you showed good customer service?
Where do you see yourself in 1 year, 5 years, and 10 years from now?
With such questions there was really no way to distinguish myself from the other 3 since none of them involved my knowledge and interest in the company, besides.
- Do you know the name of the company founder?
And with that the interview was over. The GM told all of us we would be informed (or not he also said) if he we got the job or not which for UNIQLO is the polite way of saying you didn't get it.
With such a short interview, overall the GM just seemed more interested in finding a future manager then actually looking for someone with interest in the company which ironically is exactly what he said he was looking for. And the fact he felt the need in the end to tell us how they only hire 1% of their applicants just made him and the company look pretentious for a simple retail seasonal position.
