I had a positive experience up until I sat down with my recruiter (a grumpy, pompous male FA who was anything but friendly). I had had a wonderful flight in, met an amazing 18-year flight attendant prior to boarding my flight who gave me the run-down on the company; I told her I was nervous, but she assured me that I presented myself well and would have no trouble passing my F2F...what?! A friendly UA flight attendant?! What a concept...I went into my interview crossing my fingers that my recruiter would be as kind as this lovely lady. Did that happen? Absolutely not. As each friendly, welcoming recruiter lined up to call forth all of us nervous hopefuls, I dreaded the moment a dull, unenthusiastic, man called the name of myself and another hopeful. -sigh- nonetheless I remained upbeat and professional, even going so far as to telling him my positive interaction with a UA FA on my flight in- in return, I got a forced smile as he looked me up and down like a spoiled high school cheerleader sizing up a freshman. Everything went downhill from there..there was nothing I could do to impress this individual. What did I get when I expressed interest in learning another language? A snarky response of: “ha don’t we all wish to learn another language.” Furthermore, as I answered the quintessential “Why do you want to be a FA” question, I was rudely interrupted half way through listening my qualifications/ intent with “you’re not telling me WHY”- did he want me to say the cliche response of “I want to travel” that everyone advises you NOT state? I was expressing why my experiences have prepared me to be successful as a FA AND talking about my love of working with people..why was this not enough? And to interrupt me mid-answer? Phew. Half way through the interview I knew there was no chance I would get to the second interview..all my hard work, research, excitement would not pay off.
When it comes down to it, whether or not you get this job depends on how ONE PERSON views you. Cross your fingers and hope you get someone who isn’t so disillusioned with their own life that they take it out on a young, hopeful FA. Don’t let it get you down and keep trying.
