Talked to the boss briefly. He described what the job was and asked if I could do field work. It was a one on one meeting in his office and took about 30 minutes.
Short interview with professor and perhaps with lab members as well. As long as you seem at least somewhat knowledgable and interested, there's a good chance the professor will allow you to join if they have space.
