Interviewed on the phone with one of the CEO's employees who work in his office promoting him--a separate function from the company's software platform. I called the office a few weeks prior to request a name and email for an HR person to send my resume to, and was told I could only have a general email address, jobs@uptake. After the phone portion, I was asked to come in and meet the team members. I was greeted with a 2-part interview. I first met with two friendly girls who I would've worked with in the CEO's office. I was asked about whether I'd basically be comfortable studying and researching the CEO and then getting him out in the news, in addition to being told I wouldn't be able to actually talk to him much myself, but would be able to sit in on some of his meetings. After that part of the interview, something strange happened. I was being given a tour of the office area where I would be working, and in the middle of a conversation I was having with one of the employees, she suddenly dropped her voice and said "that's HIM." I turned to see a 40ish man walking quickly behind me. I said "that's who?" and she said (name of CEO)! excitedly. I did my homework on this guy before the interview obviously but I didn't recognize him when he walked by and I think they were a bit shocked by that. Onto the second part, when I met with his right-hand gal, who lives and breathes the CEO and immediately gave me the feeling her time was precious and she didn't want to spend a lot of time talking with me. Her first question: "have you written any books?" I thought that was ridiculous. I'm a journalist who worked for a highly respected newspaper for a decade but the part about me not having written any full-scale novels seemed to be all she cared about. The interview was over in a few minutes and they politely showed me the door. I wasn't disappointed the next day when they emailed me to say they were pursuing other candidates. I had made up my mind I didn't want to work there after talking with the second woman. If you interview with Uptake, be prepared for the uppity attitude that resonates through their office.
