I reached out to an Uptake employee through LinkedIn and applied through a referral. The first interview was with the HR, which was more to make sure the HR requirements were met and to check if I have any questions. As an international student applying to Uptake. the HR helped confirm that they would sponsor the visa requirements if everything else worked out. The first technical interview was a 45-minute phone interview where you go through one of my projects in code-level detail (you get to choose which project). If you have the code published online (say Github), you can share the code in advance. I liked this way of testing my technical depth - the interviewer asked me questions about details of the code though I should add that the interviewer sometimes kept coming back to one small detail that they thought was not right. The second technical round was an 8 hour(!) data science challenge. You can choose when you get the test and have 8 hours before you make your submission. The data science challenge is a pretty good example of the kind of project that you work on at Uptake. The dataset had large memory requirements (my 4GB RAM laptop would not have been sufficient) at the time I took the test. I would encourage checking the memory requirements with the team before the challenge. I found this round challenging where you have clean the data, build your model, evaluate the results and write good code (and documentation) all within 8 hours. I would encourage being agile in this round, rather than looking for perfection. You can submit improved versions even after the 8 hour limit. The last round of interviews was an on-site/video conference interview for 2 hours. I was in Washington DC and took the video conference one. I would encourage taking the on-site one if you have the option, since the audio on the Zoom call can sometimes become patchy and you can also get a feel of the office space (which is pretty cool!). There were three rounds - one presenting the results fro the data science challenge (45 mins), one a technical interview where they test you on a real problem faced by Uptake (45 mins) and one a cultural interview to make sure you fit with Uptake's culture. One thing that could have been better in this interview, was that there was little time to ask your questions about the company. They let me know the results within the next week.
