      Sales Associate Interview

      Jul 14, 2012
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      San Jose, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied in-person. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Urban Outfitters (San Jose, CA) in Jul 2012

      Interview

Love the company, hate the process. Went to a group interview against 12 other candidates. Called in earlier that week asking if there was an age limit, manager said NO. I'm 17. Spent days preparing myself for the interview, nailed it, and followed up with a call five days later. The interview itself wasn't hard. EVERYONE was nervous, I could tell. Afterwards, everyone was given an online survey to do. I did it honestly and was told I didn't fail it. Just be confident and PREPARE YOURSELF. I took every single question on this site from the UO interviews, made a word doc of it, answered every question as I would say it perfectly, and studied it to prepare myself. Worked well enough so I was prepared for any question they asked and the interviewer told me himself on a follow-up call that I had a good interview. Called our interviewer (not the manager) after five days. He said he couldn't find my application (which I spent precious time perfecting) but said he definitely has it. I receive a rejection postcard in the mail two days later. I call in wondering what went wrong so I don't make the same mistake in the future. He says he remembers me having a REALLY GOOD interview, I had NO issue with the online survey, and tells me he isn't sure why or who sent me the postcard. Strange that he isn't the one making the decisions on the people he interviewed himself, huh? He says the only reason I might have gotten it automatically is because I'm 17. I'm turning 18 in FIVE months and was told there isn't an age limit, I had a GOOD interview, DIDN'T fail the survey, WHAT ELSE ARE YOU ASKING FOR? I call in the next morning to speak to the manager who told me there isn't an age limit and she plays it off by saying it may not necessarily be the reason for not being hired and gives me a BS answer to shut me up. Obviously there is a preference towards hiring 18 years or older. She claims to not even know who handled the postcard. It's odd that my interviewer nor the manager make those important decisions. I'm angry because it's a struggle for me as a teenager to be treated as an adult. I'm mature and I understand that this company likes hiring those out of high school, but the best of us in the interview were the younger ones. Even my interviewer would have given me a chance if he had the ability to make those decisions... at least give me a second one-on-one? Obviously, the people who interview you don't make those prime decisions that decide your fate. I'd LOVE to work at this company, it's been my dream since I was 15. Don't sweat the interview, it's easy and fun. But maybe you shouldn't even waste your time on these people who take a glance at an app and move along. I'm willing to reapply when I'm 18, but this experience really left a scar. What's the point?

The interview is done in a group of about 5-10 people. A manager asks a couple of behavioral questions, and everyone goes around answering. The vibes are pretty chill, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't prepare! It just means you don't have to be nervous.
