      Sales Associate Interview

      Sep 30, 2012
      Anonymous employee
      New York, NY
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied in-person. The process took 4 days. I interviewed at Urban Outfitters (New York, NY) in Nov 2011

      Interview

On the day that Urban was having their open call I went to 2 separate stores. The lines were miles long, associates passed out applications and we were called into group interviews about 6-8 people at a time. We interviewed with the store manager in a hovel in the back of the store; he asked general questions (experience in retail, personal style, ect.). Everything you have heard about Urban employees is true (i.e. pretentious hipsters) so don't let people tell you otherwise. The group interviews are very impersonal so it is your responsibility to speak up and stand out. That is the only way they will remember you. You can have a phenomenal sense of style (which I will get to later), but if you think retail is standing like a mannequin and looking pretty you are mistaken. Almost everyone there had the uo "look", which shows that we were clearly disposable. Refrain from wearing anything with logos on it- the manager called out a young gentleman wearing an a&f polo and another with an aeropostale shirt. This is a no-brainer- you must must must dress in accordance with the Urban Outfitters culture. This does not mean you need their clothes specifically, but dressing like a homeless person is not hard to do- they love it. They love quirky personalities but don't try too hard to fit their mold, because you will end up being miserable there as a result. They harped on having prior experience, but I got the job never having worked in retail. When the group interviews are done, the interviewer will ask you to stay behind (if they liked you) and will give you a piece of paper with a web address that links to their personality test. Be very careful when answering these questions- they seem straightforward but some are trick questions. This survey is the ultimate deciding factor as to whether you got the job. I saw plenty of people get this piece of paper but I didn't see them at orientation- proves that you have to take it seriously. I got a call the next day with an offer and accepted.

The interview is done in a group of about 5-10 people. A manager asks a couple of behavioral questions, and everyone goes around answering. The vibes are pretty chill, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't prepare! It just means you don't have to be nervous.
