      Sales Associate/Cashier Interview

      Sep 13, 2015
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Austin, TX
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Urban Outfitters (Austin, TX) in Sep 2015

      Interview

I had applied in February of 2015, and wanted to reapply for the fall before school started. I walked into the store to ask a manager how I could reapply, since my previous application was still online, and she took down my name to "send it to corporate so they can figure it out". I waited three days and my application was still not removed, so I went in person again on a Saturday around 4pm, but since there was a line at the cashiers, I told the sales associate I would return later, and she said it would be best for me to go around 7:30, before they closed. I showed up at 6:45pm, a little too early but I was nearby, and they weren't busy. I asked for a manager, and when the manager greeted me, she seemed annoyed and told me "Thursday night isn't a good time to ask about these things". I said sorry and that I'd just check online on my own, and she walked away. Her name was Milo. Later that night, I messed around with the application, trying to delete it, and I finally figured out how to withdraw it and start a completely new one. By this point, the store had put up a sign saying they were hiring for sales associates, and I became nervous that maybe my application would get lost with many others now barely applying. I got an email shortly after, about four days later, inviting me to a group interview on Thursday Sept. 10, 2015 at 4pm. I was told in the email to "dress casual, as if I already worked there", so I went in a Silence + Noise tank top, a black cardigan with gold buttons, a quartz crystal long gold necklace I bought there the day before, black motto leggings with fake leather stripes, and black ankle heel boots. My hair was long and down, and I had minimal makeup with dark red lipstick. At the interview, there were 5 other people with me, three other girls and two guys. They asked us questions that related to our style, our experiences at other jobs, and what our dream job would be, and what we would do with a gift card. It was extremely casual, but there was a feeling where you should answer first and with a long response. One of the interviewees would ramble on and on about how he had Korean influences and about how he cared about the entertainment business and incorporated those two things into every single response...And there was this very shy girl who would always be last to respond. I did notice that everyone else was wearing very casual clothes, two girls looked like they just came out of class, wearing a simple tank top/t shirt, shorts, and sandals with minimal to no makeup. The rest of the group were wearing items that were obviously not from Urban Outfitters, with the exception of one girl's jewelry. Final questions asked were: What is your availability? (Any time Mon-Sun) How many hours a week would you like to work? (30 on average for a week) Do you have tickets to music events? (No) Will you be available for the holidays? (Yes) Are you okay with temporary employment? (Yes). That Saturday, I received an email saying this: "At this time we have decided to move forward with another candidate however we’ll be keeping your application handy and if something perfect comes up we’ll be sure to reach out." I honestly don't know what I could've improved on, since I answered every question in relation to their style, I dressed their style, and I was outgoing and friendly, I had full availability and would be able to work for holidays, so I went to their store on Sunday to ask for an email to contact their HR manager with my questions for suggestions, but the manager there only told me that the information I wanted was confidential, and they couldn't tell me how to improve, just to keep on applying. I wanted to write a professional follow-up email saying thanks for their time, but that wasn't possible.
