I applied July 20th and had an interview scheduled immediately after receiving an email for an invitation. My interview was on July 23rd. The platform they used to interview me is the same platform for the VIPKID site. A guy interviewed me from some sort of call center, but I could hear him perfectly well. He asked me a few questions about myself. I made sure to wear orange and have everything ready for my 10 minute demo lesson. I did not have a headset, but used my Sennheiser headphones with a built-in mic. I didn't have a background for the demo lesson. He asked me: 1. What is your highest level of education? 2. How much teaching experience do you have? 3. Are you ESL certified? 4. Are you licensed to teach? These questions will determine your base pay. After these questions are answered, the demo lesson will begin. The interviewer will act like a five year old with limited knowledge of the English language. They gave me the lesson on a PDF file beforehand, and the lesson was on "feelings." It was about happy, sad, and angry. I used TPR, a tooth reward system, and stuffed animals. He said he enjoyed my lesson and that I would be moving onto the next stage. He sent me an email with the scoring rubric. I got a 76/100. Before being able to book the first Mock class, I had to watch a bunch of videos, read their materials, and then take a quiz. The quiz can be taken as many times as you want if you fail. You have to make at least an 80%. After passing this quiz, I scheduled Mock Class 1. I booked it for July 26th. I made sure to prepare very well for this class. I watched Youtube videos for examples and guidance. The materials were provided for me. It was a lesson about the letter X and the second half was an intermediate level lesson about China and landmarks. I tried to time myself and practice in front of the computer as much as possible. I bought a whiteboard and set up a "classroom" with a map of the USA and used my brand new laptop to make sure the camera was good enough. I turned on the lights and also used natural sunlight. Mock Class 1 for me did not go well as far as timing, but the mentor was an American woman who stopped me midway for feedback. She acted like she didn't understand what it meant for me to circle the powerpoint. I used my hands and fingers to explain it and then resorted to taking something round and pretending it was a mouse to demonstrate circling. During Mock lessons, they will try to throw you off to see how you handle students not comprehending. I honestly find it difficult to talk to a full-grown person as an adult, but I did end up moving onto Mock 2. I scheduled Mock 2 for July 31st. I purchased an official-looking headset with the mic that sticks out. The mentor will determine during Mock 1 which level you will get. If you are better suited for older or younger. I got the older, intermediate course, which was fine with me. I am used to working with high school level kids. The Mock 2 went well and timing was great. The mentor seemed to be from the USA as well. The lesson was on Earth and environmental awareness. Halfway through the lesson, she told me to smile more, have more energy, and to correct the student. I did just that and it was a pleasant mock class. She told me that VIPKID would get back to me to see if I made it or not. The following day, I received an email that my account was deactivated and that my mock class was unsuccessful. The email told me what I did well and what I need to work on. Tips: Prepare and time yourself. Make sure to watch Youtube videos on the interview and mock classes. You will get great ideas from there. I know that they are hiring tons of teachers and many good teachers did not make the cut. I did not, but I can try again. They say that you can reapply in another three months, but you can actually just use a different email address. The process was actually very eye-opening. They do a lot of screening, but it can be a huge waste of time. Getting toys or props and having a background might be a bit of a hassle for some folks. They make you go through a lot of trouble to tell you no and discuss your pay rate at the start, so they make you feel like you have the job, but you don't. I think the interview process could be improved by not making it so tedious in the middle. The quiz seemed like something you should do when you get the contract...not before scheduling Mock Class 1. Other than some time-wasting aspects of the process, I still believe that it would be a fun company to work for.
