      Lead Electrical Engineer Interview

      Oct 16, 2023
      Anonymous employee
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Very in Feb 2023

      Interview

The interview process took ~3 weeks and consisted of multiple rounds. Overall the interview process was efficient and the internal HR team stayed in touch throughout to answer questions and provide background on next steps. 1. Pre-screen with an HR recruiter. This is a basic screen to make sure skills align with the job posting and takes about 30 minutes. 2. A 30 minute technical prescreen with someone on the technical management team. A deeper dive into skills and initial feel for cultural fit. 3. A 1-hr technical interview with engineering peers. Prior to this interview you must complete a take home project and provide it to the team for review. The instructions suggest spending a few hours to complete the project, however I found that the level of detail needed to provide a solid example of one's skills pushed the deliverable to 10-15hrs. During the interview you'll be asked a few behavioral questions followed by a deep dive into the project. Overall it's a good process as you'll have the opportunity to discuss technical decisions with potential peers. Lots of good back and forth! 4. Next up is a 1hr presentation interview where you'll need to prepare and present information on a project that you've previously worked on. Preparation time here will depend on how much you've presented such info in the past and if any of that work is potentially reusable. Rough estimate is a few hours prep time. You'll have a bank of uninterrupted time followed by Q&A. The team was personable and good to interact with. 5. If you've performed well thus far, then you'll likely move on to the final interview with Very's C-suite. It's a 1-hr interview where all the fun, challenging behavioral questions are asked. Very's leaders are engaging, so I had a blast with the back and forth. :)

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Very in Jul 2023

      Interview

My interview went almost exactly like the reviewer on Jun 28, 2023. The technical project seemed a little simple for a Lead Engineer level, but I guess I have interacted with a lot of engineers that can talk a big game but can't actually put together a schematic so maybe they were weeding out that kind of person. I also put in the extra effort on the technical project to make sure they got a polished result from me that is representative of my work. I treated the technical portion of the interview as if I were conducting a design review of my project and received very few questions about my design decisions. The questions I did receive gave away the inexperienced level of the hardware team in general. I felt like the interview went well. Unlike the other reviewer and I was told the next steps at the end of the interview. They also told me to make sure to check back in with the HR person if I didn't hear within a couple days. I took this as positive sign that I was moving on in the process, but the next morning I had an email saying they were pursuing other options. I was also shocked and asked for feedback and received none.
