The usual phone screen and a succession of Zoom 1:1 interviews. Initially they expressed concern over location, then said that the hiring manager was okay with me being remote. I told them that I would need a very full relocation package to even consider moving; by proceeding they tacitly agreed to one.
One interviewer was distinctly condescending and was more interested in bragging than exploring what I had to offer.
They consumed hours of my time and theirs on subsequent interviews, then I heard nothing. I wrote to the recruiting lead, who then told me that the CEO was "still" opposed to hiring someone remote. One interviewer was extremely late without bothering to have someone notify me. After having told me that all interviewers were "blown away" by me.
I live where I do because of a family disability. Their refusal to hire me because of it is effectively legal discrimination. I was not in a position to spend the better part of $100k to move, and not have a house downpayment or any disability services lined up.
Medical "coverage" is UHC or some crappy Kaiser HMO. UHC has been sued multiple times for their illegal denial of claims and continues to do so. No 401k matching.
Context:
* In the middle of a period at least a year long during which *everyone* is working from home
* The CEO can be assumed to be able to afford to live in Berkeley. It is absurd of him to pretend that anyone else can, and before you tell me to live in Oakland, which is still outrageously expensive, I invite you to park your car overnight in Oakland then tell me the next day if you still think that's reasonable
* They told me that given my talents and experience -- and 20 years of WFH -- that location wasn't a barrier. Then they didn't get back to me, and when I pinged them, they referred to CEO BS that had not previously been disclosed
They call themselves a tech company, but make no doubts: this is a hedge fund, and is run like a regressive financial company.
