      Technical Customer Support Manager Interview

      Sep 1, 2015

      Austin, TX
      No offer
      Negative experience

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at WP Engine (Austin, TX) in Aug 2015

      Interview

Applied through LinkedIn, was contacted by recruiter, did initial phone screen, did subsequent phone-screen with hiring manager, was invited to in-person on-site. Up until this point everything was standard, very nice and personable recruiter, who followed-up timely. The on-site was odd - it was divided in two segments: each segment with two people (managers or director), each timed for one hour. The first half was a positive conversation, normal/standard questions covering experience, management style, behavioral questions, processes, all specific to support. I felt their honest desire to get to know me and to assess my ability to do the job. Towards the end one of the two guys said to the other: "I'm good, do you have something else?" to which the other one replied "I'm good as well." I had some final questions even though I had already asked mine along the way, we casually chatted a bit more, and they left so the second group would come in. The second half was very bad - the first question was asked and on my third or fourth word i got a hand-palm to my face and a 'wait that's not what I asked'... One of the two was very nonchalant but that might be a personality/culture thing, the other one gave me the non equivocal perception that he was clearly bothered with my presence: long look, extremely serious expression, very little eye contact, slouching, constant interrupting, non-professional really. After a few questions they asked me if I had questions, I asked a couple and then (with 20 minutes left to the hour allotted) i got a very loud 'AAYT - thanks for your time and we'll get the recruiter here to walk you out'... A week later the recruiter followed-up with feedback that they did think my management style would fit the role, but, they found they had run out of time because I spoke too much, so they were going on a different direction... I gave her my feedback/account - especially the part of 'I'm good, do you have something else' and we ended 20 minutes earlier parts. I also let her know that I had checked Glassdoor's interview reviews before going in and sadly can corroborate that it is not a good experience as the majority of reviews indicates.
