after application was submitted and reviewed, I was contacted for the first of two interviews about a week after submission. The interview was with the professor that would be leading the research and was primarily focused on my previous exposure to the related topics and fields that would be pertinent to the position. There was then an HR interview which was more of a formality and then an approval decision notice.
