The interview process was pretty standard, a few hiccups here and there with scheduling but nothing out of the norm until I got to the negotiation portion. I was told $150k at the start of the process which I 'agreed to'. After interviewing with the team I realized there was going to be much more required of me, instability on the team, a lot more direct reports than I thought (12), a redesign of the site, and relocation was required. When I received the official offer of $150k I countered with $175k knowing what I now know. The HR team member said she was 'taken aback' by the 'jump'. Mentioning your 'feelings' about my salary expectations is not professional. $25k more is not outlandish in the 2021 job market. After I countered she was dismissive and short for the rest of our interactions. We landed on $155k which I explained would be a step down in take home pay since the cost of living in the city are higher than where I currently live. She suggested I move further away from the city and the commute would be 'only' 40 minutes. I am moving to Florida (of all places) to work, I am not going to sign up for a 1:20 daily commute, I don't know anyone there. I was extremely polite and professional and she maintained her sour attitude. I declined the offer, I was sad at first because everyone I interviewed with was a dream. I dodged a huge bullet because a few weeks later the walk outs and protests made the news and I was happy she was so rude. I may have taken the position.
