I applied online to their Craigslist ad. They responded pretty quickly with a bit about how they liked my work and threw an art test to me to be completed in 24 hours, which was strange because they just slapped it on me without ever talking to me on the phone or asking me if I would be down for one.
The art test consisted of three parts: 1) vectorize a sketch in color; 2) make your own two characters based off reference and vectorize those; 3) vectorize a dialog box
Considering the art was sub par, I figured this would be a breeze. I vectorized the character, and vectorized my own designs of the same style, which took me the better part of a day. As for the dialog box, which had a multitude of small details that needed to be vectorized, I completed that copying everything.
After submitting my test, I was told that based on my background and skills that it wouldn't be a fit for me. Now I'm not a novice artist, so it was strange that they felt my skills were inadequate, especially considered that they should have looked at my portfolio. When I asked for clarification, I was merely told that my character faces looked too masculine. Strange because I literally vectorized their design and my designs were based off those. Since I had to provide the illustrator files, I really do think they got free work out of me.
