      Government Relations Interview

      Feb 23, 2018
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Washington, DC
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Weedmaps (Washington, DC) in Feb 2018

      Interview

Beware of this organization! I've never written a review on Glassdoor and I've never rescinded my application in the middle of an interview but I suppose there is a first time for everything. My first red flag should have been when I applied for a position in Government Relations but was sent a "chat" request for a vastly different position. I called and emailed to clarify which position I was being considered for but never received a response (which should have been another red flag). My second red flag should have been when the recruiter was late to the conference call and didn't use the number that he sent. I asked what position I was being considered for and he told me that HR determined that I would be a better fit for a position that I did not apply for. I told him I wasn't interested in that position and we proceeded to discuss the position that I actually applied for. It's also worth mentioning that it's difficult to prepare for a "chat" when you aren't sure what position you are being considered for. In the recruiter's initial email he said that we would "cover recent work that you have done, what type of work you want to be doing, and most importantly what you desire in your next role." However, the recruiter did not ask any questions about anything that he mentioned in his initial email. Instead, he asked me detailed policy questions and asked that I "pitch" him on policy stances. This should have been my third red flag. I was prepared to have the introductory 15-minute phone "chat" that he mentioned in his initial email but would have needed at least a heads up to prepare for the policy questions that he asked and I would have needed more background information to complete the "pitch" he asked me for. The fourth and final red flag and the straw that broke the camel's back was when his tone became condescending and borderline insulting. He essentially reprimanded me for not being prepared for the policy questions (though his email was marketed as an introductory phone "chat") and said that I was unqualified for the position. There was also a weird moment when I didn't understand an acronym that he kept using and I was made to feel stupid for not understanding. He offered to give me another chance at the interview. I was so aggravated and insulted that I declined and asked to rescind my application. I also expressed my frustration that I wasn't given the chance to properly prepare for this interview and mentioned that the conversation was much different than what he sent in his email and should have been given a heads up about policy questions. I have lived in Washington, DC for a number of years and have been on many difficult and strange interviews but this is by far the strangest and most unprofessional interview that I have ever been a part of. Good luck to those who choose to proceed with this organization.
