My manager should provide information on the comapny direction and goals of the area in order to meet the company expectations. The manager should be in a position of leadership and be the one voice for those working under him. The manager should delegate work and responsibilities. The manager doesn't necessarily need to be involved technically in the daily work but should be somewhat aware of what is going on and have some technical knowledge related to the area that they manage.
