      Interview

I applied in Apr 2019 for New York positions. Heard back after about 2 weeks after application. The whole process took 2 weeks. The projects they gave are time consuming.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      1. Simple data analysis question 2. Invited to an onsite info session. This session took 1 hour besides commute. This info session is really time consuming and unnecessary for onsite. I guess the only reason they do so is to save time and budget for the HR people. They asked all candidates to join so they only needed to do it once rather than explaining their company multiple times. 3. A more complicated data analysis assignment to be finished in 1 week. No specific requirements but was told to tell interesting stories found in the assignment. Got rejected after submission and was told "my estimate is not accurate enough". So they were expecting a certain result but gave no clue in advance. There are certain other companies offering the similar positions and assign take-home projects. Yipitdata is among the worst as others tell you what they expect in your analysis.

      Interview

It is the first time I write an interview review for a company because I really felt bad. It is an initial interview to know your profiles and experience, but they need you to come to the company talk to them in person. Before that there is a simple assignment for you to write a short report.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

The interview was expected to last an hour. HR first introduced you company and their working environment, then sat down to go through you resume and experience. During the process, HR kept on asking me about gaps she noticed on my resume. Usually people only put related experience on resume to make it concise, me too, because I transferred my major. What HR asked made me feel she was doing background check rather than getting to know what you really did in your related internships and projects. This part lasted for 28 minutes, then HR left me waiting for 10 minutes and came back to me said the manager was unable to talk to me today BECAUSE manager had an emergent meeting with their clients. She said manager would later reschedule a time to speak to me, so at that time I felt the situation was understandable. But today, they just sent me a rejection. I wonder do they treat candidates seriously? To sum up, 1. The conversation with HR, 2. Absence of manager, 3. The way they dealt with candidate all made me feel unpleasant and unforgettable.

Thank you for providing this valuable feedback. I am very sorry that you had a negative experience in our process, and I understand your frustrations. After receiving this feedback, we have made a few shifts to our process that we hope will ensure candidates have a consistently positive experience. To make sure expectations are clear, we have adjusted the communication prior to the first interview letting candidates know to expect a standard resume walk through during the first interview with a member of our People team. I also understand it is extremely frustrating to not be able to continue the interview and meet with the hiring manager! This is a very rare occurrence and something we try very hard to avoid. We do feel it is very valuable to get candidates into the office early in the process, however to be more respectful of time spent we are now completing the HR screening portion of the interview via phone. If you have any further concerns, questions or suggestions to how we can improve this process please feel free to reach out to jobs@yipitdata.com!

      Difficult interview

      Interview

The interview process is rigorous, but it gives you a great idea of what your actual work will look and feel like. If you don't enjoy the assignments, you won't enjoy the work. There are two take home assignments followed by a day of three or four live interviews if you do well on the assignments. The first assignment is a quick screening tool, but still requires some thought and attention. The second assignment is complex and and probably the most important part of the interview process. It takes a good deal of time to complete, but it is a great representation of the work you will actually be doing on the job. If you hate the assignment, or find it tedious or boring, you won't like the job. (As a side note, I see another review complaining about "gross" vs "net" billings. Companies often have their own definitions for financial metrics, which you can look up very easily in their financial filings. A certain company defines gross billings as "gross amounts...net of estimated refunds.") In the live interviews, you go over the take-home assignment in one and then the others are typically standard behavioral interviews. There's nothing tricky in the live interviews, but they're important.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at YipitData in Mar 2019

      Interview

Submitted my resume online and heard back shortly after. First round was a short data assignment you need to complete in two days. I made a mistake but was able to correct it after asking for feedbacks. They were kind enough to give me a second chance to move forward. So don't give up! Second round was a 30-min call with the HR coordinator about my resume and background. Third round was a group info session where the VP of product talked about the company and the DPA role. If you're in NYC you will be invited to the office; otherwise you will join via Zoom. Fourth round was a much more complicated assignment and is also the most important part of the interview process. I needed to finish a report and send it back in a week. Took a lot of my time. After I sent in my report, there were 2 rounds of follow-up questions, each took about a week. Final round was an onsite interview with 4 people - 1 engineer, 1 research analyst, the VP of product and one of the cofounders. Mostly behavioral and background questions. Worked through a small case with the VP. Overall it was one of the best interview experiences I've had. They were very responsive and I got a good sense of what the job entails.

      Question 1

The long assignment is complicated and time-consuming. Make sure you spend enough time on it to think it through and ask clarifying questions whenever necessary.
