      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at YouVisit (New York, NY) in Jul 2015

      Interview

Buckle up, these guys are absurd. The interview process started with a phone screening by a junior designer. The questions seemed to come from a very narrow understanding of design with the answers being aimed at confirming I thought design was the most important part of product. The next interview was an in-person with the head of marketing. The interviewer was smart and asked good questions about how I saw product and marketing teams working together. When I was able to ask questions to the interviewer she told me that it was very exciting working in VR but the leadership team was immature and the biggest challenge with the job was understanding their direction. My 3rd interview was an in-person with 2 of the founders, Taher and Endri. I showed up about 5 minutes before the scheduled time and was asked to wait for 25 minutes. Once the meeting started Endri began a very contentious line of questioning that seemed to challenge even the basic syntax of my CV. This interview lasted about an hour and 15 minutes. Toward the end Endri left and Taher took over where his line of questions started to ease up and become more geared at learning my approach to product management. Upon leaving the interview I was told they wanted to move very quickly and they would let me know but that they were interviewing other candidates. I received the request to have a phone interview with Abi (the CEO) about a week later. Things went well and then I was asked to come back again and meet Abi in person when he was in town. The CEO does not live in the same city as the business, this is a concern as later in this process he seemed to not be engaged in the day to day business or our process of closing a deal. Abi and I met and things went well again, after this I was asked to come in to meet with Endri and Taher once again. This interview is where I start to see the real inconsistencies in their leadership team. At this point we've been speaking for several weeks with many emails and conversations exchanged verifying my approaches to product, I've made presentations to the team of my suggestions for their product direction and first steps at improvement. The first question of the meeting comes from Endri, "Why do you think Windows 8 is a failure compared to Windows 10". The line of questions continued to come in having no real focus. As the interview goes on Endri becomes unengaged no longer making eye contact or responding when I address him. As the interview ends he quickly walks out without shaking my hand. Nothing had happened at this point for me to feel as though there was a reason I had given him to be upset so I assumed something else was happening. After the interview I wrote a thank you note addressed to Endri calling out the mistake of not getting to shake his hand on the exit of the interview, 4 days go by with no response to my thank you email. Finally I receive word from the recruiters that YouVisit would like to extend an offer to me. This then begins and even more odd exchange. During our meetings very specific conversations were had around what type of bonus package the position would have in place to give clear direction and incentive to perform well in the role. An offer letter was sent over with the a note urging to quickly sign as YouVisit was in a rush to close the deal. Upon review of the employment agreement it seemed clear that the agreement was a template without any specific editing to reflect our arrangement. When asked about this YouVisit advised me that I should trust that they would honor what what said and just quickly sign the document. I made them aware a had an attorney that I could use to make edits to better reflect what we discussed. What happens next is a series of odd conversations involving the YouVisit lawyer where despite being on the same page with Taher on the general points we can't seem to get YouVisit to agree on the language in the contract. Finally we are able to settle on adjustments to be made as both Taher and I are leaving for 2 week vacations. As we jump off the call congratulations are made I'm assured YouVisit would make the final changes to the contract to reflect the discussed bonus package. After return from vacation I sent an email to follow up on the agreement changes, two days later I received a call from the recruiter making me aware that YouVisit would be rescinding the offer claiming there was a "gut feeling that it wouldn't work because of my lack of trust". In short this was the most unprofessional interview process I've ever been part of. The leadership team in inconsistent and immature, when talking about the product they seem to not understand their product vision or even their business. If entering into the interview process I would highly recommend considering and the above and avoid waisting your time if you're looking for a good team to work with.
