I applied online for a Product Manager position and within a couple of days, I received an email from the recruiter to schedule a phone interview with her. She was really nice and easy to talk to. The call was mostly to get an idea of my background and to tell me more about the job. I specifically remembered she told me it wasn't necessary to have a technical background as long as I was able to effectively communicate with the developers on requirements. Ok, good to know. A week later, I had a call with the hiring manager. He asked a few questions and at the end of the call he said he had a pleasure talking with me and hoped to talk to me again soon. The next day, I received an email from the recruiter that I didn't get the position because they were looking for someone with a "strong technical background". I felt confused as that was one of the things she pointed out that wasn't necessary. The call at the end with the hiring manager also made me confused. They should have the job title as "Technical Product Manager" if that's what they are really looking for.
