      Research Scientist Interview

      Aug 5, 2021
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Zippin (San Francisco, CA) in Aug 2021

      Interview

Had the first round of phone call with the company's Chief Scientific Officer. It was pleasant speaking to him and was really looking forward to the technical round. Unfortunately, my experience with the technical round was extremely unpleasant and the guy who did the interview was reading off questions from a list and probably was expecting a word to word match for the answers he was looking for. So he ended up terminating the interview midway without much feedback and extreme lack of empathy. I would not have considered this role, even if I managed to clear their interviews: Zippin doesn't feel like an ideal place to work (at least from the whole interview experience standpoint).

      Nov 21, 2021
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Zippin in Jun 2021

      Interview

Had two rounds of good interviews, one with the chief scientist and coding round with a scientist. I was told the next step would involve reimplementing the method presented in a recent paper from start to finish. Although I appreciate them stating this up front, the amount of time that a candidate would have to invest for this is unreasonable to ask. They should rethink their interview process or risk only being able to hire people who don't hold other commitments, such as a full-time job. Anyway, I didn't hear back after the second round at all and that seems to stack up with other people's experiences.

I appreciate you sharing this information. I never want someone to be left in the dark about their candidacy. I'm sorry that happened, and the interview experience you shared doesn't match what we want to be happening. Please message me directly (ben.fahlgren@getzippin.com) so I can work to correct this for future candidates. The interview plan for the Senior Research Scientist role is pretty involved, and does require some commitment on the candidates side. It's unfortunate that that felt unreasonable. We think it's the best way to measure how a candidate may perform in the role, and I'd love to learn what other companies are doing for similar roles, so please don't hesitate to reach out to me. Looking forward to hearing from you!
