The rationale I was given supporting these personal questions was that the company hires based on ambition and although they are hiring to fill a specific role, your personal/professional development is important to them and they are looking for certain personality types. To me this was a positive aspect.

You should expect to be able to explain your experiences, education and goals. You need to be able to describe how you handled different situations in past positions and how your past experience and education will help you succeed in the position you are applying for.
