Initial phone screen with recruiter -- that was amazing. It was an enjoyable call and I felt I learned a lot about the company, the role, the potential growth, and the culture. I was able to talk about my future goals and experiences.
Second step was a call with the senior recruiter
and I knew early on it was not going well. He asked several times if my ultimate career goal was to become a recruiter or work in talent. I said I would be open to it, but I didn't lie and say that was all I wanted to do. During my phone screen, I was told there would be many opportunities to grow and learn new things, which is kind of expected in a startup. But he kept talking about the repetitive nature of the work and burning out if my career aspirations was not in Recruiting/Talent. I felt put on the spot, and I feel my honesty prevented me from going to the next stage.
I felt I wasted my time with this call and it could have been prevented if the phone screen made it clear that the only growth within this role was to become a recruiter or work in talent, I would have had different expectations for the second phone call. Or maybe I wouldn't have applied if the job description narrowed down the potential growth within that role. There is a disconnect between the job posting and actual expectations of the role. Don't they discuss the job posting, the role, and everything else? And it was extremely off putting that my honesty about learning and growing, no matter the position, was a mark against me.
