The work I do is kind of niche, but I've been doing it for a long time. I have a lot of experience working with well-known organizations, and I have a lot of certifications in my field. When I saw the Lululemon systems engineer position listed, I was really interested. They had a long line of things they were looking for for candidates, and a list of several "nice to have" items as well. I met every single one of the items on both lists. The company had positive reviews on Glassdoor, and I applied. I mentioned that my work is kind of niche, because I'm really confident that not many people work in the specific area I work in, and of those that do, I am on the very high end for experience. I was pretty confident that there would be few people who would match the job requirements as well as I did. It's not that I'm necessarily better than others per se, just that I've been working in the field for a long time and it's a small field, so I'd expect that there wouldn't be too many other people. About a week later, I was contacted by their talent manager, who scheduled a phone screen. During the screen, she told me about the position. I was really excited, and told her how interested I was in the role. During the call she used the phrase "If you're selected to interview," which I thought was a little unusual. Over a month later, I received an email saying the "Unfortunately, they have decided to move forward with other candidates" line. If they weren't interested in at least giving me a proper interview, that's fine; that's their prerogative. I was pretty confident that I would have fit their requirements better than almost any other applicant would have, but sometimes a company just wants who they want. But the fact that they got back to me a month later without even giving me the opportunity to have a proper interview with anyone outside of a 15-minute call with their recruiter was really in poor taste. That's the kind of thing you do for candidates who you've actually given the courtesy of at least considering and at least interviewing. I would be unlikely to apply for roles with this organization again.
