Scientist Interview Questions

"The questions you are asked in an interview for a position as a scientist will depend greatly on field of science you intend to work in. Generally, interviewers will be interested in your formal education, field of study and specialization, work, internship, and research experience, scientific writing skills, and interest in the subject matter. Expect to be asked technical questions that pertain to the knowledge needed to perform the duties of the job. While there are some positions open to scientists who possess associates' or bachelors' degrees, most jobs will require you to have at least a masters' degree with the majority requiring you to have a doctorate."

There is a pool of people who took Uber rides from two cities that were close in proximity, for example Menlo Park and Palo Alto, and any data you could think of could be collected. What data would you collect so that the city the passenger took a ride from could be determined? If some type of supervised classification algorithm was used to split the two populations, for example Support Vector Machine, what type of business decision would you make on points that appear close to the hyperplane?

The challenge had 3 parts: SQL, Experiment Design, and Machine Learning. In the SQL portion you had to write some queries to answer complicated real world questions (without any data given, just a schema). In the experiment design portion you are asked to create a hypothetical plan to answer testing a new app. In the Data Science portion, you are asked to perform binary classification on a given data set, and return insights from the classification.
