Technical Writer Interview Questions

"Employers hiring technical writers want candidates with the technical knowledge and written communication skills to simplify complex concepts. In an interview, be prepared to discuss your writing experience and provide an example of a time you explained a difficult idea to a group or classroom. Your interviewer may also quiz you on technical concepts or ask you to engage in a written exercise."

Interestingly enough, there were no difficult or unexpected questions. Since I had been working under contract for a few weeks, the interview was something of a formality. They did talk about company structure and their expectations of me that were beyond the scope of my contract work, though.

Content is covered by NDA, but basically it's about your writing projects. If you haven't done any extensive, collaborative writing projects, I'd recommend making one up and for that scenario, consider the interactions with other people, potential issues, the difficult parts, etc (relate it back to writing skills). You can probably print out a content outline from one of the documentation sites and bring it with you to the interview for help. I wouldn't waste too much time on soft skills (challenges, why should we hire you, etc), I got maybe 1-2 questions like that out of maybe 40 questions.
