To introduce myself, I am a new grad from a Master's program in computer engineering with less than 1 year of software engineering experience. After an initial (and enjoyable) phone screen, I was called for an on-site interview. The interview consisted of 5 one-on-one interviews with their tech leads and managers in the space of nearly 3 hours (also a 3 hour roundtrip for me to get there). Each interviewer had his own technical questions to ask; some required me to answer up at the white board, some on paper, some verbal. I thought I did well on the technical questions, however my first interviewer did not seem to understand one of my solutions, in which I used a hash map and which is the solution Amazon looks for to the same problem. Things got weird with the third interviewer, uTest's solutions architect. He did not seem to take the interview seriously; rather, he laughed in my face the whole time and kept repeating "I don't know" and shrugged a lot. I believe he'd decided from the start that he doesn't want any junior engineers at uTest, so he never gave me a chance (their product manager later confirmed this). The next two interviews went well and I thought overall I left them with a good impression of me. Four days later I got a badly misspelled email from the hiring manager that just said: "[Misspelled name] has no knowledge of basic Java or any other staff. So we need to pass on." This comment about me is so untrue that I did not even feel insulted, just baffled. This was the same manager I had had such a nice conversation with during the phone screen, so I wondered what I had done to deserve such a rude rejection. I genuinely liked most of the engineers who interviewed me and thought they seemed like nice people, but I guess looks can be deceiving. I have a feeling uTest is very biased in what they look for and it probably does not help that I'm female, because they are all men there. I would not recommend interviewing here for a position unless you are out of options. Their building is small and drab and most of the employees there seemed rather bored and listless. The atmosphere was a little depressing. I got the impression this is the kind of company I would have outgrown quickly, but who can say. Fortunately I received an excellent offer from my dream company about two weeks later, so I really can't complain.
