They mostly just wanted to get to know me. To be honest, They just wanted to know a bit of my background and different technologies I've worked with and what I did with it. They didn't really ask anything such as how would I tackle certain problems. I kind of felt like I had to lead these types of questions out of them or point to my experience on things based on what the tech they were using, which is pretty varied.

I wouldn't spend *too* much time on this, but bonus points for it working with a live demo! The idea here is to see, without any real brief, what you'd do to our UI / UX.

we like to get candidates to perform a small front-end based project. If you could take a page on our site (any you like), and put together an alternative design/UI/UX.
