Description Headquartered in Abilene, Texas, Hendrick Health is a healthcare system owned and directed by a local, volunteer board since its founding in 1924 as a not-for-profit hospital in response to a community need for quality healthcare. Throughout the decades, the hospital has grown with the community, offering a wide range of comprehensive healthcare services to West Central Texas.

In 2020, Hendrick Medical Center became Hendrick Health and expanded to a three-hospital system—Hendrick Medical Center and Hendrick Medical Center South in Abilene; and Hendrick Medical Center Brownwood in Brownwood. Hendrick Health also includes Hendrick Clinic, a multispecialty medical group of physicians and other advanced professional providers. Today, Hendrick Health has more than 100 service locations and serves 24 counties.

Providing the strength of a complete system of health services, Hendrick continues to offer aggressive, innovative treatments and preventive healthcare measures that include cardiovascular care, neurology and neurosurgery, neonatal and pediatric intensive care, orthopedics, women's health and cancer services.

Hendrick Health is a locally owned healthcare system in Abilene, Texas, directed by a local, volunteer board and affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas. Guided by a Christian mission to serve all, Hendrick Health operates three tertiary-care facilities - Hendrick Medical Center and Hendrick Medical Center South in Abilene, Texas, and Hendrick Medical Center Brownwood in Brownwood, Texas. The healthcare system also includes Hendrick Clinic, a multi-specialty medical group of physicians and other advanced professional providers.

The health system's roots date to September 15, 1924, with the dedication of West Texas Baptist Sanitarium. Since then, the hospital has evolved and grown to transform the region's healthcare. Hendrick Health today employs approximately 5,400 to serve 400,000 residents in 24 counties, a landmass representing 9% of the state. The health system provided $33.8 million in charity care in 2023.

As a licensed vocational nurse (LVN) at Hendrick Medical Center South (HMCS), Cedric Brooks is living his childhood dream of working in healthcare and helping others. In 2025, he was recognized for his compassion and dedication by receiving Hendrick Health’s Nurse Tech of the Year award for HMCS. In honor of Black History Month, we are proud to share his story. How did you become interested in nursing? His passion for healthcare began early. As a high‑school junior, he completed nursing prerequisites while attending both Holland Medical and Cooper High School. He then entered Cisco College’s Vocational Nursing Program and graduated from both Cisco and Cooper High School one week apart. He is now pursuing his Associate Degree in Nursing at Cisco College to become a registered nurse. What does Black History Month mean to you? For Cedric, it is about representation and honoring those who fought for equal rights and access to education. He believes diversity helps young people see what is possible and inspires them to achieve their goals....Show more
