Founding: Established in 1949 by Mary Pulvino and six other families as The Day Care Center for Handicapped Children, later renamed Mary Cariola Center.
Founding Inspiration: Mary Pulvino was motivated by her nephew Butchie, who had developmental disabilities, to create a center that provided opportunities for children with disabilities to reach their full potential. She believed in individualized care and rejected the institutional approach prevalent at the time.
Mission: Mary Cariola Center is dedicated to providing innovative and specialty programs to individuals with developmental disabilities, medical needs, and significant behavioral challenges. -Initially provided social, recreational, and vocational experiences for children not eligible for public school.
-Expanded over the years to include a wide range of services and programs tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual served.
-Currently serves more than 350 students and 44 residents across three campuses and six residential group homes in Monroe County.
-Offers an Enhanced Waiver Services Program, providing Day and Community Habilitation Services and Therapeutic Respite to individuals in the community with significant behavioral challenges.
