The West Virginia State Police (WVSP) provides assistance to the state's local law enforcement agencies and patrol's the state's highways. One special focus of WVSP is criminal investigations in unincorporated areas. The department's patrol duties are fulfilled by seven uniformed field troops. WVSP also protects the governor and the legislature, maintains a central database for records of statewide arrests and other law-enforcement information, and trains law-enforcement personnel for jurisdictions throughout the state. The West Virginia State Police was created in 1919.
