Pros

- Fully remote company - Amazing product, great design, good impact, helps people - Effort made by the company to have robust benefits for all employees - Lots of forward momentum and growth at present - Almost everyone I worked with on the staff / support during my years at the company was great

Cons

Lots of turnover at the company. People very suddenly "gone" without any notice. At first I thought this was just due to the high commitment to privacy in terms of company values. Having spoken with several former 1Password employees.. many people that I consider caring, personable team players that were highly effective in their roles being fired without valid reasons. Stories of PiPs given where there is "no chance" that the employee will be able to follow the plan and keep their role. After leaving the company, this phenomenon of staff just ghosting with no announcements seemed more ominous. From what I could notice this seemed to happen to a lot of folks falling into the DEIB space (though I may just have personally been more connected to folks in that group, consider that report anecdotal) Lots of turnover in upper management.. CMO changes and total swings in strategy. Overall I couldn't recommend trusting management or HR, especially in the marketing department. I trusted the process, reported to HR that I was feeling unreasonably pressured and gaslighted by my manager, then was let go days later despite never have received a warning for job performance or a negative performance review.

Pros

Remote work. In the earlier years, genuinely great colleagues, many of whom have since been pushed out. DEIB efforts are sincere and offer different groups

Cons

I've watched this company change dramatically, and not in a good way. 5+ CPO changes in fewer years should tell you everything you need to know about the stability of leadership here. Product and Design now reports to the CISO. That's not a strategic decision. It's a signal that no one at the top has a coherent vision for what this company actually is. The culture used to be genuinely collaborative and transparent. That's gone. What's replaced it is a politics-first environment where relationships matter more than results. You can exceed expectations on your performance review and still receive a raise that doesn't keep pace with inflation (and you can get nothing if you're performing at the expected level). Benefits (actual and perks) have been eroded year over year. At a certain point, the math stops working. Senior executives, including at the C-suite level, demonstrably don't understand how the core product works. That shows up in decisions and strategy whiplash, even how they talk about new features. For anyone in Product particularly, this creates a particular kind of exhaustion: doing serious work in an environment that isn't structured to recognize or reward it. Director-level management is inconsistent at best. Several managers at that level appear uncertain about their own mandates, which means their energy goes into self-protection rather than developing their teams or advocating for them. Growth and sponsorship exist, but largely for people who aren't perceived as a threat. Dissent is not welcome. If you push back or ask questions, expect it to cost you, whether in missed opportunities or in people hoarding context you need to do your job. If you're ambitious and good at your job, that combination will likely work against you here. I don't regret my time here - I've learned a lot - but would not join 1Password in its current state and counsel anyone asking against it. There are good people at this company. Genuinely talented, committed individuals. That makes it harder, not easier, because you can see exactly what this place could be (and used to be) if it were run differently.

Not what it used to be

Pros

Good remote work layout with an interesting product. Fast paced growth.

Cons

1Password used to be amazing back in the day. Due to bad manager and senior role hires, the company is no longer what it used to be. Culture has taken a nose-dive as evidenced by dropping internal engagement scores. Lot of bad decisions and unattainable quotas have lead to a lot of turnover. For a remote first company - the internal documentation and knowledge base is dismal. Forced to lean on co-workers even for the smallest of tasks. Promotions and internal growth are behind smoke cover. 3 years ago - this was THE company to join. Now, not so much
