Pros

Generally good pay and benefits.

Cons

There was a huge gap between management and the work force, with rules about who you could contact at what level. It was like a whistle blew at 5 pm, and staff stopped in the middle of whatever they were doing and headed for the door. It's the only job I've had where I got bored because there was not enough to do, and you were discouraged from going above and beyond the call.

Pros

AARP employs many smart and talented people and maintains a generally positive work environment. There is a good tradition of cross functional teamwork, employee recognition programs and fringe benefits.

Cons

The IT environment is constantly changing and lacks clear, obtainable objectives. Large amounts of effort are often expended on avenues that do not yield benefits to the organization or its members. Frequent reorganizations and downsizing occur as a result.

Pros

People are smart, dedicated and progressive. Salaries are excellent for non-profit work. Working conditions are reasonable. Opportunities for advancement are better than at many other organizations. The organization has clout and uses it most of the time to improve life for older Americans.

Cons

Management and bureaucratic structure are--I believe--far too disorganized. A lot of time, money and talent is wasted because of regular re-organizations. Power struggles at the top of the organization take the edge off of what AARP might accomplish.
