Run, Don't Walk Away from AbbVie

Pros

If you get the right manager, compensation and benefits are good.

Cons

Bullying and backstabbing behaviors permitted and practiced all the way up to the top, particularly in corporate functions. I witnessed behavior at AbbVie by senior management that would not be permitted at other companies. Also, the culture is Abbott-centric and often incompetent people are placed in positions of great responsibility without any qualifications other than they worked at Abbott and tell management what they want to hear. There is a general aversion to risk and managers are reluctant to act on ideas that come from new employees who didn't work at Abbott. Also, there is NO capacity to push back on bad ideas coming from management. Delivering bad news is another no-no. The backstabbing was really the last straw and reason why I left for another role at a different company. Normal companies wouldn't permit such obvious sabotage but, at AbbVie, it is seemingly encouraged by some managers. Apparently, they learned this behavior from Abbott according to people with Abbott experience.

Pros

Reputable Name Salary Benefits Great place to learn about Biopharma

Cons

Horrible Leadership! Culture has a long way to go due to poor HR departments. Many upper level employees do not respond to emails from employees who are not in a leadership position. Moving up is absolutely impossible, unless you are best friends with the right person. Recruiting process is a joke! Hard work is not rewarded, it is all about who you know, which is why almost 75% of the people landed a role within the organization because of an employee referral.

Extremely Toxic Culture and Heavy-handed Managers

Pros

Deceptively good benefits that come at a great cost (check your self-respect at the door before walking to your desk).

Cons

Very disrespectful treatment, pervasive verbal abuse in private so you don't have any witnesses to back you up, the HR dept. ALWAYS supports managers and NEVER the employee so the confidential Aware-line where employees can report issues is a big joke. Schedule is very rigid even in areas/functions where rigidity is not needed, so there's complete disregard for an employee's occasional need for flextime. Flextime requests even count against the employee during performance reviews! There's hardly any cooperation across various departments and most departments hold back information from each other that would otherwise make it easier to make and execute key business decisions. The validity of verbal or even written (email) agreements between project team members is questioned repeatedly which causes further delays in execution. But most of all, it's the management's inhumane treatment of employees in exchange for a few breadcrumbs that only the least competent employees with little or no self-respect will accept.

Transparency and open communication are important to the culture of AbbVie and it doesn’t sound like that was your experience. We’re continuing to evolve and to work towards a culture we’d pride ourselves in as an organization. We appreciate your review and your frank message.
