Pros

As an overall company, Abbott does right by their employees. They will support you when emergencies happen and generally have your back. The vastness of the company allows for a relatively smooth transition between sites, cities, states, countries. The technology is groundbreaking and, from my experience, diversity is valued and represented.

Cons

Abbott gives nearly free reign to their various divisions and the VPs and directors of various departments. If you get stuck with a bad VP or director, your career progression comes to a halt. Those situations are lead to being incredibly overworked while being vastly underpaid, but a blind eye turned to to the expectation of 40 hours/week. I became accustomed to 15 hours/day, with the sometimes off day on weekends, with no additional compensation, no basic appreciation, and no faith that my career would progress. This is very department-based and management-based.

Beware!

Pros

Decent products that help patients. Individual Contributors are great people for the most part and really care about their work.

Cons

Work life balance is a joke. R&D management demands unpaid overtime for months or years on end due to poorly managed projects and unrealistic expectations, in-office despite COVID. No help from HR. No team atmosphere, it’s every man for himself with tons of blame game and abuse. Compensation increases are nowhere to be found even for high performing workers. You’ll get lots of experience fighting fires but there is no time for innovation or intentional professional development. Career advancement is extremely slow and political. They are hiring a lot because they’ve lost an alarming number of engineers in 2021 due to all these problems. Not sure management will wake up and actually act differently going forward. They are in denial, don’t want to hear the truth. It wasn’t always this way. Beware.

Good benefits. Good people. Advancement opportunities. Corporate bullying.

Pros

Pay and benefits align with expectations for large Healthcare company. Bonus structure is good, although not transparent. Retirement benefits are good, including 401k, pension, and healthcare. Abbott supports employees with expense items (computers, IT support, etc.) they need to do their jobs.

Cons

Abbott is definitely a corporate bully. If you don't agree with celebrating Affinity Groups (LGBTQ, Women Engineers, Black Business Network, etc) If you see these groups as divisive and harmful, keep your mouth shut or you will be black-balled. Covid specific bullying: they require covid testing and reporting on a weekly basis without regard to healthcare privacy. They are requiring people return to office during recent covid surge, regardless of remote work efficiencies and any concern for health. Again, don't ask questions or disagree without being black-balled. Executive team is still an "Old-Boys-Club". We'll see if Ford will change our perpetuate the club.
