      Pros

      Excellent opportunity to learn about everything from power tools and grills to pipe fittings and house projects. Get to meet customers that take a more hands on approach in life.

      Cons

      As with any company, management can/will take a great employee and ruin them with the piling on of expectations then become disgruntled when it comes time to discuss compensation for the added labor.

      Great Customers, But Selfish Owners

      Pros

      Ace Hardware stores have remained in business because of their reputation for great customer service. Inversely, customers flock to Ace instead of the big box stores for this reason. I worked for Ace for over two decades, and this was true of all stores.

      Cons

      Unfortunately, several Ace owners pay poor salaries, and offer little to no benefits. I have also witnessed discrimination in hiring practices, and similarly, too many "workplace romances". The shifts are often long, and you must be prepared to stand on your feet for 10+ hours in most stores. Feel blessed if you work in a store that doesn't have the owner on duty as operator; too many of such people are pesky micro-managers.
