The current attendance policy is unrealistic and in need of revision. Absences are categorized as “occurrences,” and employees are allowed only three before disciplinary action is taken. This structure does not account for legitimate situations, such as contracting the flu or experiencing an illness that requires an extended recovery period. In these cases, employees are still penalized, even when the circumstances are beyond their control.
This policy creates unnecessary stress and anxiety among staff. Many employees worry so much about receiving an occurrence that they come to work while sick, which affects their ability to focus and perform effectively. Ultimately, the policy encourages presenteeism, increases workplace stress, and may contribute to the spread of illness.
