Pros

Bright, Driven Co-Workers: Many employees are highly intelligent and motivated, creating a dynamic work environment. If you avoid getting pigeonholed into working in a silo, collaboration across teams can be rewarding and offer great opportunities to learn from knowledgeable peers. Interesting Data Access: For those interested in healthcare analytics, especially in the Medicare/Medicaid space, Acumen provides a unique opportunity to work with expansive datasets. This access allows employees to gain valuable insight into the healthcare system. Team Culture: Some teams within the company foster a supportive and collaborative atmosphere. If you're fortunate enough to join a good team, there's significant potential for growth, mentoring, and skill-building.

Cons

Toxic Work Environment: Many employees, including myself, describe a "culture of fear" at Acumen. Mistakes are met with harsh criticism rather than constructive feedback, micromanagement is used as an opportunity for gaslighting, and upper management is known for its unprofessional behavior. This creates a stressful atmosphere that can be hard to navigate, and the salary isn't competitive enough to cover the therapy sessions you might need as a result. Management Issues: There is significant inconsistency and lack of preparedness among managers. Many are promoted with minimal management training, leading to confusion and ineffective leadership. The absence of feedback channels further exacerbates this, leaving employees feeling overlooked and unsupported. Despite my efforts to speak up, my skills were never fully utilized. Compensation and Benefits: Compensation is subpar relative to the amount of work and expectations, particularly given the cost of living in areas like the Bay Area. The benefits package is lacking, with poor PTO policies, retraction of tuition and professional development reimbursements, and low pay for international employees. Unpredictable Layoffs and Lack of Job Security: The company has been overhiring for years and then conducting mass layoffs with little warning and minimal severance. This has created an environment of anxiety and uncertainty, where employees constantly feel at risk of being let go without proper notice or support. Limited Career Progression and Role Clarity: The work assigned often does not align with the job description or career aspirations. The overall vision of a project is not clearly communicated, and you're expected to figure things out on your own, with recognition only when you consistently burn the midnight oil. There is little opportunity for career advancement unless you're in the "right" team, and roles can shift unexpectedly based on team needs rather than individual interests or skills. Legacy Technology and Limited Job Satisfaction: Acumen's reliance on outdated technologies, such as SAS and Excel workbooks, feels limiting, especially for those seeking to gain experience with modern, transferable skills. Furthermore, much of the work is repetitive and could be automated, leading to frustration about the long-term relevance of employees' roles. Lack of Transparency and Communication: Many employees express frustration over the lack of transparency from upper management, particularly regarding the company's direction and decision-making processes. This lack of openness creates an environment where employees feel disconnected and uninformed.

Thank you for taking time to share your perspective on Glassdoor. Your insights are helpful — to other employees and prospective applicants, as well as to our management team. We continually seek opportunities for improving our employee experience, and you have given us much to think about, as well as to work on. However, we’d like to clarify what you shared about compensation for international employees (from our perspective, non-immigrants on visa status). At Acumen, pay is based on salary ranges for like positions and similar market demographics for our industry, as well as merit, experience, and responsibilities. We also follow a Locality Pay policy, which is applied universally to employees regardless of their nationality or visa status. Prospective applicants or current employees who would like more details should contact our Human Resources team.

Pros

The work is challenging and rewarding, and I got to work on meaningful projects that had an impact. The hours are flexible and reasonable, and I had a good work-life balance. The company provides on-boarding training and opportunities to learn new tools and techniques, such as SAS, SQL, and R. The colleagues are smart and supportive, and I had a decent rapport with my manager and team.

Cons

The pay is low compared to other data analyst positions in the Bay Area, and it took a long time to get a raise or promotion. The company has a strict in-person policy that requires employees to work from the office. The company has a subpar internal organization and communication, and sometimes the coordination between different teams and departments was slow and inefficient. The company puts limited effort to foster employee engagement or satisfaction.

Pros

-Cap-exempt H1B visa sponsorship any time of the year. -Interesting projects (sometimes)

Cons

***************Flipside of pros***************** -Because they provide visa sponsorship, they exploit you: make you slog even on holidays and weekends and pay you very little. (A friend's manager told them that they are filing visas so they should not complain about workload). -Interesting projects but after some time you will be doing the same thing over and over again. It will get boring with no room for growth. They use SAS only which is not widely used in other industries. *********Team*************** Your stay at acumen largely depends on your team. If you have a good manager then it's a very good place to start your career with. But sadly, most of the managers are young people in their mid-20s who have no managerial skills. "Power Corrupts" is the phrase I would like to you here because that is what happens to those young managers. I have seen people in one team slog whereas other people at the same level do not have too much work in other teams. Same company, same people, same work still it can be very disparate and on the top of that, if your manager is bad, you are screwed for life. I have seen people developing imposter syndrome here because your toxic manager will make you believe that you are good for nothing. Acumen has a very isolated environment, where no one talks to anyone. 90% of the staff is Asian, guess due to the visa help they provide, else don't think so any person who doesn't have visa issue would like to work here. But their visa model is quite impressive----attract smart and hardworking talent, provide them visas and get the passport to exploit them. ******************************* ******************************* Just my two cents for the new people : Remember you are your own advocate. When you start a new job, it can be very scary. If you find something wrong, do not believe that things will miraculously fix themselves up. You need to speak up. If you are getting exploited or you think your manager is disrupting your sanity, please inform HR (although not sure if they would be of help as I have observed them sugarcoat but still speak up for your sanity). Staying silent will do no good. If you will not speak for yourself, nobody will. And always believe in your capabilities. Don't just stay here for the sake of visas or living in the US. You can do much better.

Thank you for sharing your point of view. We value the contributions of employees with diverse backgrounds, including foreign nationals, and are pleased to consider sponsorship for non-immigration visas and for permanent residency as appropriate. We are open to all our employees' ideas on ways to improve their work experience. Employees should always feel empowered to seek resolution of any issues by communicating openly and often with their managers. They are also welcome to raise concerns with our HR team, who are always available to assist.
